Tacoma's Point Defiance Park fills a long, narrow penninsula reaching out into Puget Sound. It features native, rose, Japanese, and rhododendron gardens; a world class zoo, a restored fort from before Oregon was even a territory (1833); an exhibit of early logging practices; a beach, boardwalk, and boathouse; and hundreds of acres of old growth forest. Within that forest lies the Five Mile Drive. This drive takes you under immense native trees and along cliffs perched above Puget Sound. On Saturdays and Sundays, this Five Mile Drive is open only to bicyclists and pedestrians.
